Weblab supports digital pathology

Digitalization of laboratory pathology requires significant investments, but they pay themselves back in benefits and savings, said Hannu Honkala, Mylab’s VP, Solutions, at the Labquality Days event in Helsinki.

Traditionally, pathologists have studied samples with microscopes and sampling glasses have been transported long distances to get an expert opinion. The purpose of a laboratory information system is to be a platform for saving and storing process and diagnostic information.

In digital pathology, laboratory samples are scanned into digital format and the digitized images are saved on a server (from) where the digitized sample can be accessed anywhere and anytime. This makes it possible for pathologists to give their reports regardless of geographical location, nationally or internationally.

– With current technology, data transfer is rapid and WSI (Whole Slide Imaging) images can easily be sent to the other side of the globe, Honkala says.

Image analysis can be computer-assisted to enable pathologists to focus on critical issues to optimize the precious time of the few pathology specialists.

Data gathered from various sources and during different phases of the process can be developed further, combined and viewed simultaneously, which supports integrated multi-specialty diagnostics.

– Digital pathology and laboratory digitalization support the entire field of pathology as well as other special fields, such as microbiology, Honkala says.

Laboratory information systems are becoming more and more important

As pathology becomes digitized, the importance and significance of laboratory information systems increases.

– Throughout the laboratory process, the laboratory information system steers the generation, linking and saving of data. When the key components, physical glass slides are digitized, the work flow becomes rapid and is no longer tied to a physical location, Hannu Honkala says.

In addition to supporting traditional pathology, Weblab, Mylab’s laboratory information system, can be integrated to various digital pathology tools and devices, such as scanners, cameras, speech recognition and image banks. All digital information – images, video, graphs and sound files — can be linked to the system.

– Digital pathology is definitely a rising trend. Mylab is there to help its customers on this path, Honkala concluded his presentation.

Hannu Honkala gave a presentation on digital pathology at the Labquality Days event in Helsinki on the 9th of February, 2017.

At the Mylab stand you could acquaint yourself with digital pathology application and 3D imaging integration solutions. There was also a 3D printer for printing digitized samples in 3D for educational or other purposes.
