Tomorrow’s Tampere will be
an international growth center

According to Tampere Mayor Anna-Kaisa Ikonen, the city of Tampere is about to begin the fifth success story of its economic history.

In her speech at Mylab’s 30th anniversary seminar, Ikonen pointed out that the history of Tampere is full of great stories about economic growth and corporate success, but the city has also had its share of transformations and dwindling industrial sectors.

Founded in 1779, Tampere was first a free city of artisans and merchants, then grew to become the largest industrial city in the Nordic countries.  In the 1970’s, it was a post-industrial city with leading expertise, and in the 1990’s, it was a leader in mobile technology.

– These four stories stem from transformations and the creative destruction that ensued. These transformations have forced Tampere to, in a way, reinvent itself and its vitality, the entire basis of success again and again, Ikonen said.

According to her, Tampere is now ready for the new, fifth success story. It is a story about a 21st century growth center, which is characterized by digitalization, networking and internationalization. It is also a story about skilled professionals, who develop the industrial Internet, a network of smart machines, and new programs and systems for the digital economy.

– Mylab is a powerful contributor in this arena, Ikonen said.

Digital services available 24/7

According to Ikonen, the fifth success story of Tampere is also a demonstration of creativity, which breaks boundaries and brings together various fields of science and technologies. This makes it possible to create completely new products and services based on smart technology.

– In the future, digital services will be available around the clock, every day of the year. For example, anyone will be able to contact a physician or nurse remotely. Remote monitoring of patients will also become easier through wireless transmission of data for the treating professional covering blood pressure, asthma, blood sugar levels or oxygen saturation, Ikonen envisioned.
