Think globally, act locally!

CEO Samuli Niiranen's message to the attendees of Mylab’s anniversary seminar was that the best way to learn and develop is to work together.

“Think globally, act locally” is a commonly used slogan and still topical, as Samuli Niiranen’s presentation showed.

The slogan resonates particularly well with laboratory diagnostics and integrated information technology.

– In the world of Mylab and our customers, scientific thinking is very much entwined with practice. At least for me, this is a great motivator. Working together is the best way to learn and develop, Niiranen emphasized.

Thinking takes place in our own minds. It is our way of perceiving and analyzing the reality and environment around us. It is rational, based on reason.

Action, on the other hand, is based on thinking and on the decisions that we make. It is goal-oriented and tangible, and is ultimately realized through our physical being.

As early as in the 17th century, French philosopher Descartes stated that one should doubt all things, especially one’s senses. Absolutely nothing is in our power, except our own thoughts. Probably the most famous quote by Descartes is: “I think; therefore, I am.”

– Do not trust what you see and do not make hasty interpretations; instead, use your reason to examine what is really behind a phenomenon. This can also be considered to be the starting point of scientific thinking, Niiranen concluded.

Local aspect highlighted in services

According to Niiranen, a shared feature in clinical laboratories and information technology is that they are both ultimately based on scientific thinking. Science and technology are inherently universal and as such, global aspects of human life.

On the other hand, diagnostic services and the information technology that they use highlight a local aspect.

– Universal technology is the foundation of what we do, but applying the methods in practical situations requires adaptation and cooperation between people, Niiranen summed up.

Mylab’s CEO Samuli Niiranen opened Mylab’s 30th anniversary seminar held in Tampere on March 30–31, 2017.
